Weigh-In Wednesday: Week 1

Happy New Year, everyone!

I have so much I could write about the holidays, but I've decided to put that off because there's something else I've been putting off for way too long.

Almost three years ago (April 2010), I started a weekly update on my weight loss progress (on a no-longer-existent blog). I had reached a weight that I was not at ALL happy with, and I needed some sort of accountability to keep myself on track. Over the course of about a year and a half, I had reached a weight I was much happier with, and I felt like I had a handle on things so that I didn't need to keep up with the (admittedly dull) weekly posts.

You can probably see where this is going. I slacked off for most of 2012, and it's caught up with me on the scale. I've gained back almost all of the weight I worked so hard to lose. Granted, I'm in way better shape than I was in 2010, because I have more muscle tone than I did back then. But I know I haven't been doing my body any favors lately, and a new year is as good a time as any to get back on the wagon! I'm dusting off my MyFitnessPal account to track my daily calorie intake, and I'm sketching up a good workout routine.

So here we go: the inaugural weekly weigh-in at Aisle Hi-Five. I'll try to keep these posts brief, or at least somewhat interesting/entertaining. If you read nothing else, scroll to the actual numbers and see how I'm doing!

I am super embarrassed about this number. But rather than beat myself up over my lack of effort, let's get right to the goal-setting.

  1. My short-term goal is to lose five pounds this month.
I really hate seeing any number in the 160s on the scale, because it takes me back to April 2010 when I was bursting out of my size 12 pants and couldn't walk up a flight of steps without getting winded. (Let's not talk about how I'm already feeling that old wheeze creep up again when I'm walking upstairs...eek!) But I also want to lose five pounds in a month because that's exactly how long it took me to gain these last five pounds. I need my body to remember that it's harder to lose weight than gain it, but that the reward is proportional to the effort. It was a breeze eating everything in sight over the holidays, and my reward is a little more jiggle in my midsection (ugh). It's going to take hard work and a lot more consideration for how I spend my time in order to lose the first five pounds, but the reward will be so much sweeter.

  2. My mid-term goal is to train for the Old Agoura 10K (March 23).
I am hoping this won't be super difficult since I ran it in 2011 and am theoretically able to run six-mile stretches at a time.... But since I haven't run in months and my last several runs  have each been several months apart (and all fairly pathetic), it could prove to be a doozy. The real goal here is to get back into a habit of running more often, and I have always found it helpful to have something to train for to get me motivated. I am also probably going to sign up for the Super Bowl 4-Miler that's in town again this year, which should be a good practice run before the 10K.

  3. My long-term goal is to get back into my size 4 skinny jeans and maintain a good fitness level and healthy eating habits.
This one has no real deadline since it's something I want to keep up for life. Ultimately, I want to continue to be in good shape and living an active lifestyle so that I can keep up the pace when I (eventually) get pregnant. I'm really inspired and encouraged by the moms-to-be who run half marathons while six months pregnant! Plus, it'll be a lot easier to get back into shape post-pregnancy if I'm in good shape before and during pregnancy, right? But even if I don't have kids in the next ten years (heaven forbid!), I want to be a healthy and fit person because it just feels better than the alternative!
I'm sure I will come up with other small goals along the way, but these are the big ones that I've been mulling over.

Stay tuned for next week's weigh-in results!

What are your fitness goals this year?

  1. Okay I definitely need to get on board with this too! And I just started using MyFitnessPal again too! (Granted I stopped for the Holidays, ha). I'm doing a 10K in Feb, we should totally train together if you want.

As amazing as the holidays were, I'm excited to get back to the weekly routine aka I need me some more Tabitha in my life! :)

  2. Here's good news...I wouldn't have guessed that you weighed that much when you were here at Christmas; the fitness must be helping. Oh, and btw, I would love to weigh what you weigh. I'm pretty sure I was 160 when we got married nearly 31 years ago. I doubt I'll ever been there again, so I don't call that my goal weight. At this point, I'd love to be under 200 again and stay there a good year before I even think of dropping any more weight. The yo-yo-ing is so frustrating that I often figure that I'd rather stay heavy than going back and forth.

  4. Sounds like reasonable, achievable goals! And wow-- I haven't worn a size 4 (in pants) since before I got pregnant (it's all due to baby blubber). I have no doubt you'll do a much better job than I did, getting back into shape post-pregnancy :-)

    1. Well, to clarify, I'm pretty sure the size 4's I have are a bit of a fluke, since when I did buy them (and fit into them), I was a size 6 most other places. I just want those particular pants to fit nicely again!

    1. Thanks lady! I'm hoping to pick up some good momentum and keep it up better this year than I did last year. I think around April I just kinda stopped trying...oops!
